The Japan Information and Cultural Centre, part of the Embassy of Japan, aims to provide a comprehensive information service on Japan and to promote Japanese culture in the UK. People in Scotland, Cumbria, and North-East England, may find it more convenient to contact the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh.
We handle enquiries on all aspects of Japan, Japanese culture and Japanese facilities in the UK. Enquiries can be made by telephone, letter, fax or email. If we cannot deal with your query directly, we will be happy to put you in touch with other organisations that may be able to help. Please note we cannot deal with visa enquiries by email.
*Visa enquiries can only be answered by the Consulate General (Visa Section). Tel: 020 7465 6565.

JICC library
For information on Japan, we maintain a lending library which stocks a variety of books both in Japanese and English on a number of topics. Daily newspapers in both languages are also kept in the library, as well as a range of periodicals and government papers.
Books (maximum two) may be borrowed for up to two weeks upon presentation of identification and an introductory letter on headed paper. We regret that there are no photocopying services available at the library.
The library is also able to provide a free video-viewing service with over 250 videos to choose from on various aspects of life in Japan. In addition to this, we also have a CD listening station, where you can listen to all kinds of Japanese music. We invite you to come to the Embassy and see for yourself.

Library opening hours:

Visas
Journalists in possession of a UK passport do not need a visa to visit Japan for short-term assignments (up to six months). If you plan to be based in Japan for longer - either as a full-time employee of a news organization or as a freelance - you will need to apply for a visa and accreditation as a foreign correspondent. Please contact the Visa Section at the Embassy for details.

Speaker service
The Embassy speaker service can arrange to provide a speaker on Japan to visit non-profit making organisations. Due to speakers' frequently busy schedules, a request needs to be sent to us at least two months prior to the event. We will find a speaker and the speaker service fund will cover the cost of the speaker fee. The fund is limited and so we are not always able to help with the cost. For further information please contact the JICC.
