Christopher Dawson honoured by Japanese Government

7 June 2007

Mr Christopher Dawson

On 25 May at a special ceremony in Tokyo, the Award for the Overseas Promotion of Japanese Food from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries was presented to Mr Christopher Dawson, Chairman of Clearspring Ltd, by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and in the presence of former Prime Minister Mr Junichiro Koizumi, in recognition of his contribution to promoting awareness of Japanese food abroad.

Mr Dawson started to import and sell traditional and organic Japanese food in London in the mid-1970s, after which he spent nearly two decades in Japan working for a company that specialised in developing traditional and authentic Japanese food products. In 1993 he returned to London, took over the management of Clearspring and fashioned it into a company distributing tasty traditional foods that support good health, promote sustainable agriculture and provide economic stability for the producer communities. The company is based at offices in West London, with a packing and distribution facility operated by a privately-owned partner firm in the Netherlands.

Supporting the traditional Japanese view that food and medicine have the same origin, during the almost 20 years he spent in Japan and the period since then, Mr Dawson has worked hard with small and medium-sized local food producers to develop and export traditional organic foods, paying particular attention to the wholesome quality of the ingredients.

Long before the overseas "boom" in Japanese cuisine began, Mr Dawson started pursuing his goals in an honest and innovative way. His personally selected Japanese food products, currently numbering more than 90 items, have been developed for export and are centred on regional specialities such as tamari soy sauce, hatcho miso and juwari soba (all-buckwheat noodles). Made with top-quality Japanese ingredients, they have been highly acclaimed by consumers in the UK and 30 other countries.

On hearing that he was to be honoured by the Japanese Government, Mr Dawson commented: "At last I have made a breakthrough! The Japanese Government recognises my activities. Now I can really get to work!"

In the light of Mr Dawsons passionate commitment to making Japanese foods readily available in the UK, Europe and the Middle East, this Award is very well merited. (further information: www.clearspring.co.uk)
