What is Japanese Studies?
A degree in Japanese Studies usually combines language study with components in Japanese history, literature, economics, politics and so on. Students can gain a thorough grounding in the Japanese language as well as developing a wider knowledge about the country and its culture as a whole. In most cases, the course will also include a year abroad in Japan. It is also becoming more common to study Japanese alongside another discipline as a 'Joint Honours' degree.
Why study it?
Consider these:
- For a relatively small country, Japan has the third largest economy in the world and is a leading contributor on the global stage on issues such as climate change and security.
- Some of the largest and most prominent companies are Japanese (think Sony, Mitsubishi, Toyota) and are always on the lookout for foreign talent who can fit easily into their company ethos.
- Likewise, global 'titans' of retail such as Tesco, Ikea and H&M have entered Japan opening up further opportunities.
- Japan is a cultural 'superpower'. Whether it's martial arts or manga, kabuki or karaoke, aspects of Japanese culture have become very much an integral part of other cultures around the world. Knowledge of the language will allow you to appreciate first-hand these fascinating East Asian influences.
Wherever your interests lie, there is a reason to take up Japanese Studies. In today's ever competitive society, knowledge of another language will help you stand out from the crowd, as well as expand your understanding and view of the world. Japan is a truly captivating country with a rich, distinct culture and huge economic and political influence.
So why not make Japanese Studies the choice for you?
