An amended Immigration Control Act has come into force, which includes provisions for helping to prevent terrorist attacks. More specifically, the amended Act has established a new procedure wherein, upon landing in Japan, foreign nationals (excluding special permanent residents, people under the age of 16 and others specified as eligible for exemption) are required to submit personal identification information such as fingerprints. The new procedures have been put into operation as of November 20, 2007.
