Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku
Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku were prosperous post towns along the old Nakasendo highway which linked Edo with Kyoto during the Edo period. Nestled deep in the mountains of southwestern Nagano Prefecture, they served as way stations where travellers could stop for food and rest. The towns have maintained their traditional feel with cobbled streets and little or no signs of modern civilisation. To this day, the postal workers of Tsumago deliver the mail on foot, wearing a bamboo hat and traditional cotton livery called happi just as in the Edo period.
