On 3 March, Japanese families with daughters celebrate gHina Matsurih (or doll festival), setting up in their homes a display of dolls representing the emperor, empress, attendants and musicians in court dress, and eating diamond-shaped rice cakes and drinking shirozake.

For those interested in traditional culture, March offers Nakamura Fukusukefs Kabuki demonstration, the Kaetsu Centrefs Japan Day, and a drum performance by Kodo. They are sure to please your eyes, ears and palate.

If your interest is in modern Japan, there is a lecture by Professor Arthur Stockwin on Japanfs new politics and a film screening followed by a talk with Madame Beate Sirota Gordon, author of the womenfs rights clause in the Japanese Constitution.

As for highlights in February, the quality of entries in the Manga Jiman 2009 Competition and the level of Japanese proficiency of the finalists at the Peter Parker Business Japanese Speech Contest were higher than ever before. This reflected the growing interest in the UK in manga and the Japanese language, which may actually be inter-related.

Having seen applications for the 2010 JET Programme increase drastically from the previous year, we also hope many students will be interested in the MEXT Scholarships.
