New art photography from Japan

8 Oct - 20 Nov 09, Leeds

Klenz's work is based on the Naiku Shrine in Japan. Access to the shrine is prohibited and every twenty years it is substituted for an identical replica as part of the Shinto belief of renewal. In her work Klenz has collaborated with different architects and model-makers to build replicas of the structure based on the only available blueprint. In doing so she has put the Naiku shrine through a conceptual process of transformation, manipulation and interpretation.

Revealing the step between the idea/blue print and the resulting photographic images this 'in process' exhibition shows Klenz's model replicas of the Naiku Shrine alongside the blueprint from whcih they derived. The final commission will be shown for the first time at the Djanogly Gallery, Nottingham in January 2010.
