We’re delighted to be hosting a panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges for future Japan-UK cooperation in a post-Brexit environment at the Royal Society of Edinburgh on the 21st of February. This is an official event of the Japan Season of Culture 2019-2020.

The panel will be joined by:

– Seiji Kawazoe, Associate General Manager at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management.

Seiji Kawazoe has worked in the bank’s asset management and investment section, and he gained professional experience as a Fund Manager and as a Senior Fund Manager for Global Equities for institutional accounts. He has been based in various locations (Tokyo, New York, London, and Luxembourg) where he gained deeper insights into the global financial industry, particularly in the field of equity investments, including corporate disclosure issues and regulatory frameworks. Currently he is in charge of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) guidelines and polices at the bank. Mr Kawazoe is a visiting fellow at Reading University, Henley Business school, and part-time lecturer at Tokyo University.

– Ambassador Shotaro Oshima, Chairman at the Institute for International Economic Studies (IIES)

Ambassador Oshima is Chairman at the Institute for International Economic Studies (IIES). His 40 years’ experience as a diplomat in Japan’s Foreign Service includes Member of the Appellate Body at WTO (2008-2012), Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (2005-2007), Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (2000-2001) and Director-General for Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1997-2000).

– Professor Yuichi Hosoya, Professor of International Politics at Keio University

Professor Hosoya is Professor of international politics at Keio University, Tokyo. He is also Senior Researcher at Nakasone Yasuhiro Peace Institute, Senior Fellow at The Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research, and also Adjunct Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA). Professor Hosoya was a member of the Advisory Board at Japan’s National Security Council (2014-2016), and Prime Minister’s Advisory Panel on National Security and Defense Capabilities.

– Govinda Finn, Japan & Developed Asia Economist at Aberdeen Standard Investments

Govinda Finn is the Japan & Develop Asia Economist at Aberdeen Standard Investments. His experience includes time spent as a journalist in the London bureau of Japan’s oldest newspaper, Mainichi Shimbun, and he was a Capital Markets Correspondent at Thomson Reuters. He is a member of the Asia Scotland Institute’s International Advisory Council and a member of TheCityUK – Japan Market Advisory Group.

There will be invitation only sessions prior to the main public evening debate. The invitation only sessions will focus on specific areas such as trade and investing and will be attended by experts in the specific industries.
