Director Ogura finds a pretty candy seller, Koharu, at a cinema, who dreams of becoming an actress. The director immediately gives her a role in his play, but she ruins take after take. She goes home determined never to be an actress. Kenjiro, a young assistant, is sent to her home by the director to fetch her, and says ‘There are many young girls who want to become an actress, but only a few whom we want to make an actress.’
Later, Kenjiro writes a scenario entitled Floating Weeds, which is selected by all the studio staff for their next big-budget film. Koharu’s big chance then comes. A popular actress who was supposed to star in the film elopes with her lover, and Koharu is chosen as her substitute. Production goes smoothly until the final take, in which she is unable to project the depth of performance required by the director.
