Explosion of Energy: Japanese Contemporary Theatre from the 1980s to the Present and Futrure

A Talk by Akihiko Senda

In this illustrated lecture, Akihiko Senda, one of Japan’s most influential theatre critics, will explore Japanese contemporary theatre since the 1980s, showcasing directors and playwrights who have changed the course of Japanese theatre. Amongst others, Mr Senda’s talk will cover the work of Yukio Ninagawa, the influential director known also in the UK for his breath-taking productions and those of Hideki Noda, who has successfully staged Japan-UK collaborative projects with British actors such as Kathryn Hunter. In addition, he will also introduce works by directors and playwrights from a new generation, such as Oriza Hirata, Matsuo Suzuki, Keralino Sandrovich and Toshiki Okada, currently enjoying wide acclaim and popularity in Japan.
