Third Thursday Lecture: Looking at Japanese Erotica in a Comparative Context
15 January 2015, Norwich
Dr Ellis Tinios
ABOUT THE LECTURE In this talk Ellis Tinios, a participant in the British Museum shunga project, will consider features of Japanese printed erotica of the Edo period (1603-1868) that distinguish it from its European counterparts. Leading Japanese artists imbued their erotic work with humour and joy, affirming the conviction that ‘making love is the prime glory and height of pleasure’. Guilt, shame and sin are alien to their representations of ‘the way of love’.
