Book Launch: Commerce and Culture at the 1910 JAPAN-BRITISH EXHIBITION: Centenary Perspectives
7 March 2013, London
We are delighted to host this special book launch featuring talks by the editors Dr Ayako Hotta-Lister and Professor Ian Nish of the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a commentary provided by Dr Gordon Daniels, formerly of the University of Sheffield. The formal proceedings will be followed by a Q & A session and a short drinks reception.
The 1910 Japan-British Exhibition was held at White City, Shepherd’s Bush, to celebrate the ongoing Anglo-Japanese alliance. It was a massive undertaking by the Japanese government to improve the British image of Japan and proved extremely popular attracting over eight million visitors during its six-month stay. This volume offers an important insight into the political and economic background to this exhibition and its legacy. Also included are chapters on the Japanese media and the exhibition, the arts of Britain and Japan, Ainu in London, and Japanese gardens.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase on the night at a special discounted price.
