Ceramics and Chess in Asia evening talk

13 September 2011, London

This illustrated talk covers the history of ceramics and chess in Asia. This includes the origins and rules of chess related games such as shogi. It also outlines the history of ceramics in Japan, including the kilns and techniques involved, and the links between chess and ceramics in Asia. This is followed by refreshments and the opportunity for questions. The talk is delivered by Rose Kerr, Former Keeper of the Far Eastern Department at the V&A and President of the Oriental Ceramic Society, now Honorary Associate of the Needham Research Institute, Cambridge. The talk takes place in a beautiful setting surrounded by the stunning taxidermy diorama’s that the Powell-Cotton Museum is particularly famous for.

This event celebrates the loan of a rare and beautiful 18th or 19th century Japanese ceramic shogi board from the Horniman Museum in London to the Powell-Cotton Museum, where it is on display until 25th September. The shogi board will then go on tour to several other museums in the UK, with further associated events. This tour is part of the Arts Council funded “Object in Focus” loans programme, which allows rarely seen objects from the Horniman Museum’s collections to go on tour to other museums.
