This year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the “Choshu Five” in the UK. In commemoration of this, the Embassy of Japan, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Council for Global Promotion of Railway (CGPR) and Japan Railway Technical Service (JARTS) present a special railway exhibition.

Japan-UK cooperation relating to railways dates back to 1863, when Masaru Inoue, “The Father of Japanese Railways”, came from Japan to study in the UK. At the exhibition you can find panels explaining historical stories, such as the establishment of the Japanese Railway in 1872 under the guidance of UK engineer Edmund Morel, as well as on current and future Japanese trains such as Shinkansen and maglev trains. The exhibition also features N Gauge models of those modern trains.

The Japanese Railway Society in the UK will also exhibit prints of the early days of the Japanese Railway in the next room.
