Familiar and Distant by Jason Hindley
Photographic Exhibition - In Aid of Japan Tsunami Appeal

20 May - 3 June 2011, London

100 images of Japan taken over a period of 13 years by award-winning photographer Jason Hindley, will be exhibited at theprintspace gallery in Shoreditch, London. All proceeds from the print sales will go to the British Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal. The exhibition will provide a rare opportunity to purchase the exhibited prints at an affordable charity price.

Familiar and Distant is a compilation of Hindley’s personal photographs taken during his various trips to Japan, a country where he finds a constant source of inspiration. Blurring the boundaries between carefully framed still life photography and snapshots of fleeting moments of the mundane, Hindley’s images quietly observe the daily humdrum of Japan to reflect what could be described as unnoticeable fragments of everyday life; a theme that reappears in Hindley’s work time and again. Seemingly familiar views of backstreets, public spaces, and people going about their daily life reveal subtle details in an intimate and yet reserved manner, conveying a unique sense of everyday Japan.

“I draw from the familiarity and accessibility I sense as a repeated visitor to Japan. This juxtaposed with a feeling of resigned distance inherent in being a ‘foreigner’ fuels my impulse to capture what I observe”, explains Hindley. With Familiar and Distant and it’s collection of 100 images taken in Japan, Hindley hopes to make a contribution to the Japan Tsunami Appeal and support the country which has given him continuous inspiration.
