The Japanese Photobook Then + Now
Talk by Ivan Vartanian
16 October 2012, London
Responding to the growing interest in Japanese photography in the UK, Ivan Vartanian, a Tokyo-based author, editor and producer, will discuss what makes Japanese photobooks distinct from their western counterparts. Beginning with examples from the 1960s & 70s—including the work of photography masters Daido Moriyama, Nobuyoshi Araki, Shomei Tomatsu, and Eikoh Hosoe—the discussion will also continue to the contemporary legacy of the earlier specimens. Vartanian will also discuss his recent collaboration with Japanese photographers to produce experimental photobooks that incorporate performance and participation from the viewers.
