"Lyrical Abstraction"-Sculptures by Hironori Katagiri and Kate Thomson

14 Jun - 31 Oct 09, Berwickshire & Greater Glasgow

Contemporary abstract stone sculpture by Japanese sculptor Hironori Katagiri and British sculptor Kate Thomson shown in the house and gardens of two fine examples of Scottish architecture: Mellerstain House, an exquisite Robert Adam stately home: and Charles Rennie Mackintosh¡Çs iconic, Hill House.

Both sculptors, who have been living and working in Japan for the last 20 years, explore sculpture as language and philosophy to create a tactile poetry of space, form and light.  Their work shows a unique cultural synergy, of complementary yet very individual approaches.

During the exhibition there will be workshops, talks and tours on the theme of relationships between art & architecture, highlighting the cross fertilisation of ideas between different disciplines and cultures, including a ¡Èpecha kucha¡É 20 x 20 presentation by Hironori Katagiri, Kate Thomson and other artists, architects and landscape architects on the relationships between art and architecture, in Edinburgh during the Edinburgh Art Festival in August 2009.
