Mashiko Pottery Japan- A Japanese Making of Modern Ceramics
This is the first time Mashiko Pottery exhibits overseas.
Shoji Hamada, designated a ‘Living National Treasure’ in 1955 and one of the main founders of the ‘Mingei’ (Arts and Craft) movement, was the principle reviver of Mashiko-yaki (pottery). Mashiko-yaki was developed through Hamada’s experiences of life in the UK, and interactions with groudbreaking craftsman of the era including Charles Eames, Bernard Leach and Eric Gill.
The ideology behind the form was the remans to be, beauty in functionality.
