Meiji Ornamental Textiles at the National Museum of Ireland
15 March 2017, London
A lecture by Dr Clare Pollard
Clare is Curator for Japanese Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Her main area of research has been the decorative arts of the Meiji era. In 2012 she organized “Threads of Silk and Gold”, the first exhibition of Meiji decorative textiles outside Japan.
Emperor Meiji reigned from 1868 to 1912 , during which time Japanese society moved from being an isolated feudal society to its modern form. Fundamental changes affected its social structure, internal politics, economy, military, and foreign relations.
Additionally the Society’s good friend Yasuko Kido will assist in bringing a special Japanese flavour to the evening.
