Utagawa Hiroshige: Japanese Prints from the Honolulu Academy of Arts

8 Jul - 27 Sep 09, London

After his near contemporary Hokusai, Hiroshige is the most famous master of the Japanese woodblock, renowned particularly for his 100 Famous Views of Edo.

Born in Tokyo in 1797, Hiroshige studied printmaking and painting, becoming an illustrator of comic poetry and story books. By 1830, he was concentrating on making prints of famous Japanese landscapes.

This remarkable show is curated by Gian Carlo Calza, Professor of East Asian Art History and Director of the International Hokusai Research Centre at the University of Venice, and organised by Arthemisia, Milan.
