Joint Lunch for His Excellency The Japanese Ambassador

6 March 2018, London

The guest of honour at the Japan Society and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the UK’s first joint lunch of 2018, will be His Excellency the Japanese Ambassador, Mr Koji Tsuruoka.

It is nearly two years since Mr Tsuruoka arrived in London to take up his post as Ambassador to the Court of St James on 6 June 2016. Two weeks later, the British electorate voted to leave the EU. Since then, we have observed a US Presidential election and snap general elections in both the UK and Japan. The importance of Japan as trading partner and investor in Britain has been highlighted at the same time as sports fans and general public alike look to Japan in anticipation of the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

We are delighted to welcome Ambassador Tsuruoka to reflect on his first year and a half in office and give his assessment of the current state of, and future potential for UK/Japan relations.

Koji Tsuruoka joined the Foreign Ministry after graduating in Law from the University of Tokyo. Immediately prior to his arrival in London he led the government team for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, involving 12 countries in the Asia-Pacific. Before that, he was the personal representative of the Prime Minister to the G8 and G20 meetings and also served as Deputy Vice Minister in charge of foreign policy. He has extensive experience working in Japanese diplomatic missions in areas as diverse as Indonesia, Washington D.C and Moscow.

Ambassador Tsuruoka will speak following a two-course lunch, after which there will be time for questions until 2.30pm.

Cost: £70 per head for members of the JCCI and Japan Society, and their guests
