Back in 1940, while Japan is heading for the darkest time in its history - the Second World War, the Nogami family lives frugally but happily in Tokyo. However, Shigeru, a researcher in German literature with anti-war ideas, is arrested for violating the Peace Preservation Law, and the life of his family drastically changes. Kayo struggles to support her family while she lavishes affection on her children.

The film was officially entered in the 58th Berlin International Film Festival Competition Section in 2008
