Osamu Tezuka: Movies into Manga

A film season celebrating the achievements of Osamu Tezuka and marking the 80th anniversary of the artist¡Çs birth. Best known for Astro Boy, Tezuka created literally hundreds of comics and dozens of film and TV titles and revolutionised Japan¡Çs comic and cartoon industries. Inspiring generations of successors he become a major influence on modern Japanese popular culture, earning the title ¡ÈGod of Manga¡É. The Barbican¡Çs screenings of films and rare television episodes created or inspired by his work will be complemented by an exhibition of drawings, animation cells and artefacts in the cinema foyer alongside a programme of talks by season curator Helen McCarthy which will explore his influence on Western cinema, anime and manga workshops for children and screenings for schools.
