It is 1945 and the Japanese forces at the Burma front are attempting to retreat across the border into Thailand. By playing his handmade Burmese harp, Private First Class Mizushima is invaluable in both misleading the enemy and boosting his comrades’ morale. A ceasefire is declared but the frequent sight of his fallen countrymen overwhelms Mizushima.
A moving story of one man’s struggle to understand the causes of war and human suffering.
This colour remake of the Oscar-nominated 1956 original by Ichikawa, released forty years after the end of the Second World War, was Japan’s top box-office hit in 1985.
