Classical Guitar Recital by Sean Shibe: J.S. Bach and Villa-Lobos
8 February 2018, London
The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation will host a recital by internationally acclaimed classical guitarist, Sean Shibe. This recital will follow Shibe’s debut tour of Japan in January 2018, featuring performances and masterclasses in Takasaki City Core Hall (Tokyo), Musashino Shimin Bunka Kaikan (Tokyo) and Munetsugu Hall (Nagoya), organised by the Musashino Cultural Foundation.
In this concert, Shibe will perform Lute Suite No.2 in A minor (originally in C minor) BWV 997 by J.S. Bach, and a selection of Etudes and Preludes by Villa-Lobos.
Sean Shibe
Sean Shibe was born in Edinburgh in 1992 of English and Japanese heritage. He studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and is currently with Paolo Pegoraro in Italy. At the age of 20 he became the first guitarist to be selected for the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, and the only solo guitarist to be awarded a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. He was selected by the Young Classical Artists Trust in 2015. In 2017, Shibe’s softLOUD project premiered to critical acclaim at the East Neuk and Edinburgh International Fringe Festivals. Challenging preconceptions, softLOUD juxtaposes early Scottish lute pieces for acoustic guitar, with electric guitar arrangements of multi-tracked repertoire including US composer Julia Wolfe’s powerful elegy LAD and David Lang’s Killer.
In Summer 2017, Sean undertook a tour of China and Delphian released his first solo CD of English music. He also appeared as a soloist with the Scottish Ensemble at the Cummock Tryst Festival and recorded with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Highlights during 2018 include debut concerts in Tokyo and Nagoya and recitals at Wigmore Hall, the Elbphilharmonie und Laeiszhalle in Hamburg and the Mosel Festival in Germany.
