London Jazz Festival : Makoto Kuriya & Tony Lakatos

10 November 2012, London

These gigs provide a golden opportunity to see these two internationally renowned artists perform together for the first time!

Japanese - born piano genius, Makoto Kuriya graduated from West Virginia University with a major in linguistics, but he was drawn to studying music. When he returned to Japan, he did an ensemble with jazz-legend and pianist Herbie Hancock at the Tokyo Jazz Festival, one of the biggest festivals in Japan. He is one of a few Japanese artists who is trying to put their own cultural imprint on the music. He is now devoting his efforts to "authenticating Japanese jazz" - maintaining a distinctive cultural identity and bringing a Western-free localized Japanese jazz sound to the world!

Tony Lakatos - This Hungarian saxophonist, was born into a very well-known Magyar musical family. Initially, he studied the violin but aged 15 years he commenced playing the saxophone - winning a National Jazz Competition in 1977. Two years later he graduated from the Bela Bartok Conservatory in Budapest. He is currently based in Frankfurt, Germany and has played on over 300 LPs/CDs either as a leader or sideman. Tony Lakatos has collaborated with an array of international jazz artists ranging from Terri Lyne Carrington to Randy Brecker via Jimmy Scott.

Makoto Kuriya and Tony Lakatos will perform with Nim Sadot (electric bass) and Bence Bolygo (drums).
