17:30     lecture-demonstration by Junko Ueda: A closer look at the Satsuma Biwa 
History, playing techniques, comparison with Buddhist chant, other biwa genres,traditional vs contemporary repertoire, etc.

Mix of traditional and modern pieces, including the cadenza from Takemitsu's ‘November Steps’ with Joe Browning (shakuhachi), and a taste of Buddhist chant
