The Love Suicides at Sonezaki
4 - 6 October 2010, London
This moving piece of early Japanese theatre was first performed in Japan in 1703. The suicides described in this play took place on May 22, of that year and Chikamatsu (widely regarded as one of the greatest Japanese dramatists in history) was stirred by them to compose this, his first domestic tragedy.
Inspired in design and direction by Japanese animation and manga, Peter Case has adapted this story and now presents a powerful piece of puppetry that remains true to the nature of the original text. This show will also feature live anime inspired videos that blend with the performances on stage and music performed and curated by Peter Sheppard-Skaerved.
The Love Suicides at Sonezaki has been praised for the simplicity of its plot and the poetry of the love journey; it remains one of Chikamatsu’s finest works.
Starts 8pm.
Tickets: £12 (£10 conc)
