The Women of Ishikawa

5 & 6 May 2018, London

Doubtful Sound is a bilingual theatre company from Tokyo now based in London. They research, translate, and perform traditional stories and folktales from far flung areas of Japan. They will debut their new show, The Women of Ishikawa, at the Wadsworth Fringe Festival in May. The Women of Ishikawa showcases the female characters from selected tales written in Ishikawa. The stories are strange, hilarious and tragic, and include an old couple battling over mochi, two young women who fall asleep on a monk’s head, a puzzle-solving elderly woman who couldn’t be left in the forest to die, and a young woman who gets murdered by the sun. Doubtful Sound will once again be joined by six members of the SOAS Minyo group, Japanese folk song devotees who sing and play traditional instruments. The group have performed at the Japan Matsuri, Hyper Japan, event at the Japanese Embassy, and numerous Japanese festivals in the UK and abroad.
