MAKOTO KURIYA

This dynamic Japanese born pianist graduated from West Virginia University, USA with a linguistics major, and later studied and performed with Nathan Davis at the University of Pittsburgh. He spent most of 1980s in the USA and toured, playing piano, with the Grammy winning artist Chuck Mangione in the late eighties. He returned to Japan in 1990, and produced a series of critically acclaimed CDs and was also much in demand for commercial recording work. In the nineties, he performed the soundtrack for cult film ¡ÈNeo Genesis Evangelion¡Éwhich became a global success.

Since 2001, Makoto Kuriya has been writing and producing songs for the best selling Japanese pop artist, Ken Hirai. In 2002, he completed the film score for ¡ÈNitaboh¡É - which was performed by the Warsaw Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2004, Makoto Kuriya performed with his own group and with Herbie Hancock at "Tokyo Jazz", the largest jazz festival in Japan.

In 2005, his first European Tour ended in great success. The following year he undertook his second European Tour, including a stunning performance at "The City of London Festival". He has also performed in Australia and Morocco.

His 2010 European Tour will also see concerts being performed in Budapest; Paris; Brussels and Cologne.

Makoto Kuriya will be performing at The Pheasantry with Eric Ford on drums and bassist Nick Pini.
