Hiroshima-based painter Shinji Ihara has been selected for the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award 2026 at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
This marks Ihara's third consecutive participation in the exhibition since 2024.
His selected work, After the Rain, We Remain (2026), reflects on memory, grief, and the quiet continuation of everyday life. The portrait depicts his long-term partner standing on the rooftop of the building where they have lived together for many years.
The Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award is one of the world's most prestigious international competitions devoted to portrait painting and presents outstanding contemporary portraiture by artists from around the world.
