東北に思いを馳せる SPARE A THOUGHT FOR TOHOKU until 29 March 2013

The Embassy Foyer Gallery is host to an exhibition coinciding with the second anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011 (otherwise known as 3.11) which wreaked devastation in the Japanese northeastern region of Tohoku. The subsequent damage to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant added another dimension to the disaster.
This exhibition is a visual commentary by artists and support volunteers who have worked in the stricken area with local people and an illustration of their wish to collaborate and help in the reconstruction efforts.

On display here are the works of the eight Japanese members of the Fukushima Photo Project. One year after the disaster in the Tohoku region these photographers, many of them from the region itself, exhibited in six venues in Aizuwakamatsu and Kitakata in collaboration with the Fukushima Prefectural Museum. The project was a response for the need to find meaning and hope in the confusion and uncertainty in the wake of the terrible events of 3.11. Two years on, some of these works are on display in the Embassy of Japan with new works by the photographers shown concurrently in Minami-Soma in Fukushima.

Photographers: Komatsu Toru, Koshima Yukiko, Ono Yoshimasa, Sudo Akiko, Sugino Mari, Takasugi Noriko, Seto Masato, Uma Kinoshita

In addition, it is an opportunity to see a display of the activities of Action for Japan UK, an organization comprising undergraduate and postgraduate students in the United Kingdom whose desire has been to help those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Volunteers have raised money and visited the Tohoku region assisting with the reconstruction effort.
