Manchester Japan Day 2010

17 October 2010, 11am - 5pm

Midland Hotel, Peter Street, Manchester M60 2DS

This year's Japan Society North West Japan Day will be held in Manchester. Throughout the day we will have demonstrations of manga, origami, calligraphy, ikebana, oil painting, Japanese ceramics, sushi making and displays of a variety of martial arts such as Kyudo, Aikido, Iaido. The Northern Token Society stand will have an exhibition of real samurai swords. There will be kimono/yukata dressing which has proved so popular with our younger attendees at previous Japan Days; and we will also have our favourite Japanese chef, Taka doing Japanese cookery demonstrations.

An abundance of Japanese food will also be on sale.

The whole event will get off to a rousing start with Taiko drumming by Tantara Taiko.

Sponsorship has been very important and we are delighted to be able to hold a raffle for which there are some exciting prizes. First prize is two return tickets to Japan provided by Finnair, 2nd prize is a box of Japanese craft items to the value of £70, donated by Festival of Japan 3rd Prize is a voucher for two for a meal up to the value of £60 at the authentic Japanese restaurant Etsu in Liverpool, and 4th prize is a sake set and Japanese doll.

The tremendous support given by the Japanese Embassy in London will help to make the event a great success, and we are looking forward to welcoming the Minister Plenipotentiary, Mr. Hayashi and Mrs. Hayashi. We are also delighted that the Lord Mayor of Manchester Mr. Mark Hackett and the Lady Mayoress Ms Sheila Saunders will attend. Other major sponsorship has been provided by the British Sasakwa Foundation and the Japan Society.

Over 2000 people visited the 2008 Japan Day in Liverpool and we hope to beat that number this year! The Japan Society North West hopes to recruit more new members but, perhaps more importantly, we hope it will introduce an even greater variety of Japanese culture to people in and around the North West as well as further consolidating relationships with the many Japan-related groups from around the area.
