Studying abroad and receiving an international education is becoming increasingly popular amongst today¡Çs students in order to expand their experience and boost their employability. Currently, there are said to be over 1.5million foreign students around the globe, many of whom have selected Japan as their country of choice.
Japan¡Çs universities provide an excellent academic environment with state-of-the-art technology. In fact, in the 2010 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, two Japanese universities (Tokyo and Kyoto) came in the top 20 with regard to learning environment.
The Japanese Government (MEXT) Postgraduate Scholarships have been offered in the UK for over 50 years and give UK graduates an opportunity to continue their studies, fully-funded, at universities in Japan. They are open scholarships, available to graduates in almost any and every field.
As the main aim of the scholarships is to foster academic links between the UK and Japan across a whole range of disciplines, it is not necessary for applicants to be able to speak Japanese. Of course it can be hard to envisage living and studying in a country where you cannot speak the language. Aware of this, the Japanese Government has launched the Global 30 programme, identifying 13 universities which are working hard to create an attractive educational and research environment for international students. These universities, which include many of the top universities in the country such as Tokyo and Kyoto universities, are expanding the number of degrees that can be earned through English only classes as well as providing international students with the opportunity to learn about Japanese language and culture. In addition, many MEXT Scholars are granted 6-months of intensive language tuition upon their arrival in Japan.
Previous MEXT Scholars have studied geology, fine art, medicine, literature, history and biology amongst others.
From previous Scholars:
¡ÈMy time in Japan will stay with me my whole life. Not only did I have the opportunity to research in wonderful locations with excellent mentors, but I also made friends from Japan and around the world. The experience has made me a stronger person and I would absolutely recommend anyone to go for it as well.¡É
Tom Bouquet, Geography teacher
MEXT Scholar 2007-2009, Kagoshima University (Volcanology)
¡ÈMy two years as a MEXT Scholar gave me academic and life opportunities in a way that no other scholarship could. The experience of studying at a Japanese university and living in Japan is one I would strongly recommend to anyone, regardless of what career they¡Çre thinking of developing.¡É
Martin Dusinberre, Lecturer in Modern Japanese History, Newcastle University
MEXT Scholar 2003-2005, Kyushu University (History)
