Mr Shinichi Nishimiya, Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, passed away from acute heart failure on Sunday 16 September at 8:47am. He was 60 years old. Mr Nishimiya served as the Director of the Japan Information and Cultural Centre at the Embassy in London from 1998 to 2001. He is remembered by many for his tireless efforts to strengthen the UK-Japan relationship. The central contribution he made in his capacity as Joint Chief Executive of the UK Secretariat to Japan 2001 will leave a lasting legacy for many decades to come. This year-long celebration of Japanese culture and lifestyle in 2001 and 2002 comprised over 2000 events with an estimated attendance of three million nationwide.

Wake (otsuya): Thursday 20 September (18:00 – 19:00 local time; 10:00-11:00 GMT)
Funeral (kokubetsushiki): Friday 21 September (10:30-12:00 local time; 2:30-4:00 GMT)
