This is a story about Hokkaido’s Asahiyama Zoo, which became the first zoo in Japan to develop exhibition spaces designed to showcase animals’ natural behaviour. Amid the continuing economic downturn of the early 1990s, the Asahiyama Zoo is in danger of closing due to falling attendances. Through a series of initiatives such as specialist guides for each animal and “nighttime viewing”, the Zoo gradually begins to win attention and regain popularity.
Based on the true success story of a regional zoo, the film is also a heartwarming tale of a young zookeeper’s personal growth.
