Japan at the Edinburgh Festival 2013

It’s August and once again it’s the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. If you are Scotland this month, it’s well worth seeing the wealth of international entertainment on offer, including a variety of Japan-related events.

If classical music is your bag, at the Edinburgh International Festival, you can see the highly respected artist, Japanese-born British pianist, Mitsuko Uchida on 13 August and internationally renowned Japanese violinist Midori on 22 and 24 August.
If what is on offer at the Fringe is more to your taste, then you will certainly not be disappointed. You can enjoy Japanese ‘Locky’ with comedian Hiroshi Shimizu. His show is on every day until 27 August and it’s free! Scottish-based Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers perform almost every day until 26 August. More taiko drumming can be seen from Wadaiko Tokara, based in Nagano in Japan. The group presents Kazakoshi (Mountain Wind) every day until 26 August. Another free event is NE-BU-TA a playful performance using a paraballon by Uv + Km, a collaborative project from Japan. Find out exactly what this involves by going to Princes Street Gardens until 20 August.

On 20 and 21 August, there is the opportunity to see the tradition of Japanese comic storytelling, The Rakugo Show by Someta Hayashiya. Celebrated Japanese actor, Taichi Saotome blends the traditions of Japanese dance, sword fighting, kabuki drama and multimedia to create his visual spectacular, Ubon. And last, but not least, and hoping that they bring some of the tropical sunshine of Okinawa with them, performers of the Ship of Ryukyu present Okinawan folk music and dance with a contemporary twist from 14 to 20 August and classical court music, song and dance from the Ryukyu Kingdom (present-day Okinawa) from 21 to 26 August. Rarely seen outside Okinawa, and with a show of very high quality, Ship of Ryukyu present an opportunity, I would suggest, not be missed.
