Design your own pictogram with the Nippon Design Center

Learn how pictograms distil complex ideas into clear, instantly recognizable symbols in this workshop led by designers from the renowned Nippon Design Center.

Pictograms help us communicate without words and are especially useful when travelling, allowing people to navigate across language and cultural barriers.

Designers at the Nippon Design Center created the Experience Japan Pictograms as a visual guide for visitors to Japan, introducing aspects of daily life, customs and culture in a clear and engaging way.

In this hands-on workshop, participants receive expert guidance from the designers behind Experience Japan Pictograms and apply their tips to create an original pictogram that represents something from their own hometown or home country that they would like to share with others.

The exhibition Pictograms: Iconic Japanese Designs is on display in the Gallery at Japan House London from 30 July until 9 November 2025.

Tickets for the event are non-refundable.Please read ourTerms and Conditions for Event Ticketsbefore purchasing your ticket.

Please note that filming and photography may take place at this event. Photos and footage of the event may then be used to promote Japan House London, helping more people to discover what we offer. If you have any concerns, please contact us online or contact a member of the team on site.

About the Nippon Design Center

Nippon Design Center (NDC) is a multidisciplinary creative agency established in Tokyo in 1959 to develop the Japanese economy through a design perspective. Designers from the Nippon Design Center in Japan played a key role in creating groundbreaking pictograms for the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. Building on this history, in 2019, the Nippon Design Center launched the Experience Japan Pictogramsproject, intended to enrich the experiences of international visitors travelling in Japan. Today, the Nippon Design Centre operates internationally with offices in Tokyo, Nagoya, Beijing and Los Angeles.
