Sumo’s displays of immense strength, deep spiritual meaning and the strong sense of tradition have long captivated audiences.

So much more than just a wrestling bout, sumo has a storied history from its early ritualistic beginnings, to Imperial patronage and later as the national sport of Japan which is celebrated internationally.

This exhibition aims to convey the rich history and distinctive visual imagery of sumo showing the many the long-standing traditions and rituals still observed today.
