CHILDREN’S DAY CRAFT CLASS AT PANTECHNICON

Visit the Studio at Pantechnicon to make your very own koi carp Koinobori streamer flags in celebration of Japanese Children’s Day, guided by Pantechnicon’s in-house designer, Moe Nakagawa, on the bank holiday weekend on 1st & 2nd May.

Children’s Day is a national holiday in Japan which celebrates children's personalities and happiness. The day is represented by the flying of koi carp streamer flags known as koinobori – since carp swim upstream, they are used as a symbol of perseverance and courage.

A set of carp flags are usually flown outside of people’s houses to represent the family and unity. Traditionally, the top and largest flag is black and represents the father, the next is red and represents the mother, while the following ones represent the children. As the air flows through the carp-shaped streamer, it gives the appearance that they are swimming.

All materials are provided by Pantechnicon, so ready the kids for some artsy bank holiday fun while learning the ins and outs of Japanese Children’s Day.
