How Do You Live? was first published in 1937. It follows the story of Copper, a fifteen year-old boy struggling to deal with the inevitable change that came with his father’s death, and his uncle, who writes to him sharing knowledge and offering advice. Published in English for the first time, this tale of philosophical discovery, widely considered as a classic of Japanese literature, is sure to leave a lasting impression. This work will be adapted into film by Hayao Miyazaki, award-winning animator and director of films such as Spirited Away. Translated by Bruno Navasky.
Genzaburo Yoshino (1899-1981) was a writer, editor, and journalist. After beginning working at a university library, he was arrested for helping arrange a communist meeting. As he was unable to return to that position upon being released, he became editor of a sixteen-book series, having written one of the entries: How do you Live?
