The Ukraine War and Global Cybersecurity

The Russia-Ukraine war has revealed the increasing relevance of cyber warfare and the potential impact that cyber threats might have globally. Cyberspace is regarded as one of the domains of hybrid warfare, in which digital attacks are used against an enemy state, disrupting vital computer systems. This domain is more accessible than others, enabling volunteers around the world actively to join a war.

In this webinar, experts will explain the present situation for global cyber threats and their challenges to cybersecurity, as well as potential future scenarios for cyberspace, and recommendations to increase safety.

Mihoko Matsubara

Mihoko Matsubara is Chief Cybersecurity Strategist at the NTT Corporation, Tokyo, where she is responsible for cybersecurity thought leadership. She served at the Japanese Ministry of Defense before her MA at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies on a Fulbright Scholarship. Prior to joining NTT, she worked as Vice President and Public Sector Chief Security Officer for Asia-Pacific at Palo Alto Networks. She served on the Japanese government’s cybersecurity R&D policy committee between 2014 and 2018. She is Adjunct Fellow at the Pacific Forum, Honolulu, and Associate Fellow for Cyber at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, London. She published a cybersecurity book in Japanese from the Shinchosha Publishing Co., Ltd. in 2019, which won an award from the Okawa Foundation for Information and Telecommunications in 2020.

 
James Sullivan

James Sullivan is Director of Cyber Research at RUSI. His research focuses on national cyber strategies, cyber security and resilience, the cyber threat landscape, and issues relating to offensive cyber. James leads a research team at RUSI that seeks to lead the way for research into cyber security and cyber policy issues. It brings together government, the private sector, and academia, merging both policy and technical analysis to inform policymakers and practitioners alike. Most recently James has published papers on ransomware, 5G cyber security, and cyber diplomacy.
