Sake and cheese pairing is rapidly gaining popularity in Japan and abroad – come experience what people are getting so excited about!
Join us at West London Wine School for an evening introduction to Japanese sake, and then learn how to pair it with cheese. Matching sake and cheese is actually much easier than with wine, thanks to the powers of umami (savouriness, the "fifth taste"), fermentation (both cheese and sake are naturally fermented products) and lactic acid (present in both sake and cheese).
Our sake tutor Sarah Stewart will cover the basics of sake and cheese production during the lecture portion of the evening, and tell the unique stories of the artisanal sake producers in Japan behind each premium sake we showcase. We will feature some special sake styles (Junmai, koshu, kimoto, bodaimoto) that have lots of umami and pair beautifully with cheese. You will also learn about basic sake and food pairing principles – sake of course goes perfectly with Japanese food, but did you know it is a great match for Western cuisine too? You'll pick up lots of useful information to help you choose the perfect sake and food match, and find out which sake styles you like most.
On the evening we will try six different premium sake across a range of styles, accompanied by six artisanal cheeses from cheesemonger Hamish Johnston.
West London Wine School received the prestigious WSET Educator of the Year Award in 2018 for the top wine education provider globally – it has won numerous awards for the quality of its teaching and has an average review of 5 stars (highest possible score) on Trip Advisor.
