Sake Rice Varietal Class & Tasting: Yamada Nishiki, the King of Sake Rice

Curious about the different strains of rice used to make Japanese sake? Join us at West London Wine School for the second session in our 3-part sake varietal series to learn all about the most renowned sake rice varietal, the king of them all: Yamada Nishiki. Our sake tutor Sarah Stewart will take you through a curated flight showcasing the very best this legendary rice has to offer.

Yamada Nishiki is the undisputed King of Sake Rice: no other rice varietal is as highly prized, or commands as steep a price. Developed in Hyogo Prefecture in 1923, Yamada Nishiki is now the most widely grown sake rice in Japan and is an essential ingredient for making award-winning sake. The top rice fields in Hyogo have similar renown to the best vineyards in Burgundy, and sake producers fight to purchase the top grades of rice from the dedicated farmers working these plots each year. Join us for this premium sake tasting and experience what Yamada Nishiki is capable of first-hand!
This class is suitable for all levels, from total sake newcomers to those who have already completed WSET or other sake credential courses and want to further hone their sake tasting skills. During the class you will taste six premium Yamada Nishiki sake across a range of styles, accompanied by fine cheeses and Japanese- influenced nibbles.

Cost: £45 per person, or £40 if booking for our full 3-part rice varietal series
