Film Screening – Focus on Ozu Yasujirō: Late Spring

Japan House London is delighted to present two free screenings of Late Spring as the third film featured in the current film season focusing on the work of one of Japan’s most cherished directors, Ozu Yasujirō. Late Spring is an insight into a father-daughter relationship and a study of one’s freedom (or lack thereof) to live a life on one’s own terms.

In this 1949 film, Ozu portrays his characters with tenderness and compassion, telling the seemingly humorous story of a widowed father, who decides to re-marry to prompt his daughter to agree to marriage to a candidate carefully selected by the girl’s aunt. Beneath the ‘happy ever after’ story of two prospective weddings lies a drama of people forced to do something they do not want to, only to satisfy social expectations and fulfil others’ perceptions of their own happiness. The film features a pair of Ozu’s favourite actors Hara Setsuko as Noriko and Ryū Chishū as her father in an ingenious pas de deux.

Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at The Stand on their way in.
