Film Screening – Focus on Ozu Yasujirō: An Autumn Afternoon

Japan House London is delighted to present two free screenings of Ozu Yasujirō’s last film, An Autumn Afternoon to close the current film season which has featured a selection of works from one of Japan's most significant directors.

One of Ozu’s few colour motion pictures, An Autumn Afternoon, released in 1962, revisits a similar story to that told in Late Spring.
A widowed father, played by one of Ozu’s most frequent collaborators Chishū Ryū, decides to arrange a marriage for his daughter to spare her from loneliness when he eventually passes away. The story of a father’s deep affection for his adult child is told in an unpretentious and warm manner, while echoes of war and long-gone youth give the film an elegiac and nostalgic touch.

Many critics agree that An Autumn Afternoon creates a perfect sense of closure to the cinematic works of Ozu, who died in the year following its release. Through his filmography, with its recurring cast members, characters and themes of family, marriage, parenthood and childhood, and more importantly loneliness and longing for human connection, Ozu tells a universal story of human life and the essence of existence.

The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles.

Duration: 113 minutes.

Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at The Stand on their way in.
