Join us at Japan House London for a free screening of the NHK WORLD-JAPAN documentary A Monk Who Wears Heels. The documentary features the story of Kodo Nishimura – a Buddhist monk, makeup artist, and LGBTQ+ advocate. While at first glance these three facets of his identity may seem to be entirely separate, the common thread running through them is a desire to live life as the person you most want to be and be at peace with who you are. Kodo Nishimura harnesses Buddhist teachings to overcome adversity and raise awareness of sexual discrimination. Through six months of close coverage, the documentary showcases his concern for those who struggle with their identity, and his empowering message to be true to who you really are.
Following the screenings participants will be sent a survey, through which they are encouraged to submit their questions for Kodo Nishimura. A selection of questions received will be used to structure an online talk event with Kodo Nishimura on 28 July 2023.
This film is in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 50 minutes.
Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at The Stand on their way in.
