Japan House London is delighted to present two free screenings of I Wish, opening the current film season focusing on the work of one of Japan’s most acclaimed directors, Koreeda Hirokazu.
The film tells the story of two brothers set apart by their parents' divorce and the distance between their new homes at opposite ends of the island of Kyushu – one of them located in Hakata, Fukuoka, the other in Kagoshima. The boys learn that their cities will be soon connected by a new train line. A whispered urban legend overheard in the school cafeteria makes them believe that when the very first trains to run on new tracks pass each other, a miracle will happen and any person to witness this will be granted a wish. They set out on a mission to see this magical moment with their own eyes, make a wish and reunite their family.
Koreeda is celebrated for his ability to work with child actors. In I Wish the stunning performance of real-live brothers Maeda Kōki and Maeda Ōshirō provides an unspoiled and true portrayal of childhood. The viewers are presented with a heartwarming story of fraternal bonds and every child’s dream of a happy home told in a tender and delicate way.
The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles.
Duration: 127 mins
Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at The Stand on their way in.
