Do you love Japanese film classics, anime or contemporary cinema stories? Do you miss Japan and want to see it at least on screen? Would you like to learn and discuss about Japanese culture and society? The Japan Society Film Club is an online space to chat about films and Japan in an informal atmosphere.
For our Film Club in November we invite you to watch and engage in a discussion about the anime-thriller Perfect Blue directed by Satoshi Kon.
Perfect Blue (パーフェクトブルー, 1997) is a gripping psychological thriller directed by Satoshi Kon. The story follows Mima Kirigoe, a former pop idol turned actress, as she navigates the harsh realities of the entertainment industry. Her transition takes a dark turn when she becomes the target of a sinister stalker who blurs the lines between reality and illusion, pushing Mima to question her sanity and identity. As her world unravels, the film delves deep into themes of fame, obsession, and the fragility of self. With its intricate storytelling and mind-bending visuals, Perfect Blue is a haunting exploration of the human psyche.
Kon Satoshi (1963-2010) was one of the most beloved and celebrated anime creators in contemporary Japan. Kon was born in Hokkaido and started his career as a manga artist and editor. He made his debut as an anime film director in 1997 with Perfect Blue to which followed acclaimed anime films such as Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003) and Paprika (2006), all directed and written by Kon. He was also responsible for the television miniseries Paranoia Agent (2004) and contributed to the establishment of the Japanese Animation Creators Association in 2007. He died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 46.
Japan Society Film Clubs take place on the first Wednesday of the month. We recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Films are often available online for free, to rent or with subscription, on DVD/Blu Ray or on BFI player. The event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films.
If you have any questions, please call the Japan Society office on 020 3075 1996 or email events@japansociety.org.uk.
