Ainu Language Workshops for Adults 大人向けアイヌ語ワークショップ

Explore Ainu language through this immersive workshop and get a first-hand experience of how the language is taught today in Biratori to local community members.

The Ainu language, or aynuitak, is a language isolate with many regional variations, distinct from the Japanese language. Passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth, it has been crucial to the transmission of Ainu culture. It is listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ by the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger. This means that while it is not yet extinct, as the last native speakers have died the language is kept alive through the efforts of those who are prepared to learn.

There is an abundance of resources for those who want to study the Ainu language; despite its status as critically endangered, it has been exceptionally well recorded. There are also numerous and various written materials such as textbooks and dictionaries. But it is the very act of speaking Ainu language, be it through conversation, the repeating of folk tales, the reciting of mythic epics and singing, that sustains the language and allows for its transmission. These workshops give participants an opportunity to learn elements of the Ainu language by word of mouth in an immersive and engaging way.

The tutors teach using the community-based and immersive Te Ataarangi method, which was designed in the late 1970s as a Māori-language learning programme for adult learners. It not only proved to be highly effective, but also played a major role in Māori-language revitalization, which is one of the reasons the method has been implemented in Biratori.

This event is a part of a series introducing various aspects of the Ainu language organized in conjunction with the exhibition Ainu Stories: Contemporary Lives by the Saru River on display in the Gallery at Japan House London from 16 November 2023 until 21 April 2024.

Please note that filming and / or photography may take place at this event. Photos and footage of the event may then be used to promote Japan House London, helping more people to discover what we offer.
